Chief of Staff, U.S. 7th Fleet, Capt. Jeffrey T. Griffin
CAPT Jeffrey Griffin was born in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan. He is a 1986 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, and was commissioned through the NROTC program.
CAPT Griffin’s sea duty assignments include division officer tours in USS MERRILL (DD 976) and USS CHANDLER (DDG 996), department head tour in USS PRINCETON (CG 59), and Executive Officer in USS CURTIS WILBUR (DDG 54). He also served as Chief Staff Officer to Commander, Destroyer Squadron FIFTEEN.
He assumed command of USS LABOON (DDG 58) in July 2004, and conducted an exchange of command with USS GONZALEZ (DDG 66) as part of the Atlantic Fleet DDG Sea Swap Initiative. In 2005, he deployed in GONZALEZ as the Anti-Submarine Warfare Commander for the KEARSARGE Expeditionary Strike Group. CAPT Griffin later returned to the United States and took command of USS STOUT in September 2005. He completed his tour and relinquished command of USS STOUT in April 2006. During his tour, STOUT earned the 2006 Battle Efficiency Award (“Battle E”).
CAPT Griffin commanded USS NORMANDY (CG 60) from August 2008 to August 2010. During his tour, the ship deployed to the USCENTCOM Area of Responsibility as the Air Defense Commander of the USS HARRY S TRUMAN Carrier Strike Group, and was the first U.S.-based ship to respond to Operation UNIFIED RESPONSE earthquake relief operations in Haiti in 2010.
Ashore CAPT Griffin has served as Test Director for the Vertically-Launched ASROC program, COMOPTEVFOR, as Deputy Executive Assistant to the Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe/(NATO) Commander-in-Chief Allied Forces Southern Europe in Naples, Italy, and as the Sealift-Airlift Branch Chief in the Logistics Directorate (J4) of the Joint Staff, Washington, DC, and as the Deputy for Ship Operations, Maintenance, and Modernization in the Surface Warfare Division (OPNAV N96), and as Branch Head for Combat Systems Integration (OPNAV N86). He achieved certification as a Requirements Manager from Defense Acquisition University during his tour in OPNAV. His most recent assignment was as the Division Chief, Maritime Operations Center (MOC-D) at U.S. Fleet Forces Command.
CAPT Griffin graduated from the Naval War College in 1999 with a Masters degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. He was selected to serve as an Associate Fellow, CNO Strategic Studies Group XVII. He is a graduate of the Joint Forces Staff College, and is designated a Joint Specialty Officer. He also completed the Navy Senior Leader Seminar at the Naval Postgraduate School.
CAPT Griffin’s personal awards include the Legion of Merit (3 awards), Defense Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), Meritorious Service Medal (3 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (4 awards), Navy Achievement Medal (2 awards), and the Combat Action Ribbon. He received the 1989 CINCPACFLT Junior Officer Shiphandler of the Year award, and was the March 1999 President’s Honor Graduate of the Naval War College.
