Chief Musician Daniel B. McGowan, a native of San Diego, CA enlisted in the United States Navy in October of 1993 and attended Recruit Training in Great Lakes, Illinois. Upon graduation, he attended Musician A school in Norfolk, VA and later reported to Navy Band New Orleans in July 1994, where he served for four years with the U.S. Navy Steel Band.
Chief McGowan reported to SEVENTH Fleet Band in Yokosuka, Japan in May of 1998 and served as a percussion instrumentalist. In May 2000, he reported to the Pacific Fleet Band where he served as unit leader for the protocol combo, and by the end of his tour, was promoted to Musician First Class.
In 2005, after graduation from Musician C School, he reported back to the SEVENTH Fleet Band, and served for five years as unit leader of the popular music groups Orient Express and Far East Edition, and as the Operations Petty Officer and the Leading Petty Officer. He was selected to Chief Petty Officer in 2010 and reported back to Norfolk, VA for advanced instruction at the Senior Musician Course.
Following graduation, he reported to Navy Band Northwest in Silverdale, WA, as the Operations Chief and Leading Chief Petty Officer. In July 2013, he reported back to SEVENTH Fleet Band where he is currently the drummer for the popular music group, Orient Express and serving as Leading Chief Petty Officer.
Chief McGowan holds a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from San Diego State University. His personal awards include the Navy Commendation Medal (2 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (6 awards), Good Conduct Medal (6 awards). Chief McGowan lives in Yokohama, Japan with his wife Mika, son Ian, and daughter Kelsey.
