The exercise is part of exercise Foal Eagle, a series of joint and combined field training exercises which demonstrates the United States' commitment to the Republic of Korea and U.S. alliance, and enhances the combat readiness, flexibility, and capabilities of the combined force.

Waves of AAVs loaded with 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit Marines disembarked the USS Bonhomme Richard and stormed the beach during the exercise. Amphibious operations training is one of the many scenarios the 31st MEU conducts during their 2017 spring deployment.

Foal Eagle is a series of joint and combined field training exercises conducted by Combined Forces Command (CFC) and U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) ground, air, naval and special operations component commands. Approximately 10,600 U.S. forces are operating alongside Republic of Korea forces.

College students from Okinawa International University, Ryukyu University and Toyo Medical Community College toured the USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) as part of a military exchange experience during the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit’s 17.1 Spring Patrol of the Indo-Asia-Pacific region. Education programs, such as this military exchange experience, increase cooperation, trust and understanding between the U.S. military and the Okinawan community. As the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward deployed unit, the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit’s air-ground-logistics team provides a flexible force, ready to perform a wide range of military operations, from limited combat to humanitarian assistance operations, throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
