PACIFIC OCEAN (Oct. 31, 2011) - Capt David A. Lausman, commanding officer aboard the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73), greets Vice Adm. Scott Swift, Commander, U.S. 7th Fleet, as he arrives aboard. Swift arrived aboard George Washington along with three senior leaders of the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force to observe Annual Exercise (AE) 2011. George Washington is currently participating in AE 11, a Japanese-sponsored bilateral field-training exercise. AE 11 is designed to allow the U.S. and Japan to practice and evaluate the coordination procedures and interoperability elements required to effectively and mutually respond to the defense of Japan, to a regional crisis or contingency situation in the Asia-Pacific region, while building bilateral confidences and working relationships.
