ANDAMAN SEA –The Nimitz Carrier Strike
Group arrived in Kuala Lumpur (KL) for a four day port visit Feb. 7.
The USS Nimitz (CVN 68) and USS
Pinckney (DDG 91) pulled pier side at Port Kalang, where more than
5,000 Sailors will enjoy the sights and sounds of Malaysia.
“Our Sailors have enjoyed the last few days of training with our
partners in the Royal Malaysian Navy and Air Force, and are ready
for liberty in the iconic city of KL," said Capt. Paul Monger,
Nimitz commanding officer.
The Nimitz Strike Group spent the week working with Royal Malaysian
Navy and Royal Malaysian Air Force in a series of surface and air
exercises as part of normal Theater Security Cooperation between the
two nations.
“We are honored to be partners and believe that strong relationships
between our two navies contribute to the peace, security and
stability in the region," said Rear Adm. John W. Miller, commander
Carrier Strike Group 11, “It is always great to work with the
professionals of the Royal Malaysian Navy.”
While in Malaysia, the Sailors have arranged for KL city tours,
tours outside the city, adventure trekking, rock climbing, golf and
a trip to historic Malacca.
Several Sailors will participate in seven community service projects
helping to improve homes for the underprivileged, these projects
were coordinated by the Rotary Club of Pantai Valley.
Nimitz Carrier Strike Group (CSG) is on a routine deployment in the
region.
Nimitz CSG is comprised of USS Nimitz, embarked Carrier Air Wing 11,
embarked Destroyer Squadron 23, and the Ticonderoga-class cruiser
USS Chosin. Ships assigned to DESRON 23 include the destroyers USS
Pinckney, USS Sampson and the frigate USS Rentz.
Squadrons from CVW 11 include the "Black Aces" of Strike Fighter
Squadron 41, the "Tophatters" of VFA 14, the "Warhawks" of VFA 97,
the "Sidewinders" of VFA 86, the "Indians" of Helicopter
Anti-Submarine Squadron 6, the "Black Ravens" of Electronic Attack
Squadron 135, the "Providers" of Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 30
and the "Wallbangers" of Carrier Airborne Command and Control
Squadron 117.
Helicopter detachments include the "Easy Riders" of Helicopter
Anti-submarine Squadron Light 37, the "Battle Cats" of HSL 43, the "Wolfpack"
of HSL 45, the "Scorpions" of HSL 49 and the "Wildcards" of
Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 23. Also accompanying the Nimitz CSG
are Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 11 and the USNS Bridge. |
