7th Fleet Leadership Welcomes U.S. Forces Korea aboard USS Blue Ridge

By U.S. 7th Fleet Public Affairs

YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) – The embarked 7th Fleet staff and crew of USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) hosted a visit and tour for Commander, U.S. Forces Korea, Aug. 28 while the ship is docked in Yokosuka, Japan.

Gen. Vincent K. Brooks, commander, United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command, U.S. Forces Korea met with Vice Adm. Phil Sawyer, commander, U.S. 7th Fleet, and other senior leadership to gain familiarity in how fleet operations are conducted aboard the flagship.

During their discussion, Brooks offered the latest updates and his perspective on the Korean peninsula. Both leaders talked about looking for greater opportunities to contribute to each other's mission, and how 7th Fleet supports activities in Korea.

"Seventh Fleet plays an important role in defending the Republic of Korea, and in enforcing sanctions.  It was great to be aboard Blue Ridge again after five years.” said Brooks.

Gen. Brooks had visited USS Blue Ridge while he was serving as commander, U.S. Army Pacific.

Further discussion focused on how naval assets from 7th Fleet contribute to joint operations as well as the U.S. and ROK alliance to ensure continued security in the region.

Brooks toured ship spaces that support fleet command and control actions, and received briefings on current maritime operations.

“My experience with General Brooks was inspiring and it made me feel honored that he stopped to ask me a few questions, like about my experiences on the Blue Ridge, and the excitement to go out to sea and see some amazing ports again.” said Quartermaster 3rd Class Joshua Stroberger.

As a command ship, Blue Ridge has been forward-deployed to the Yokosuka, Japan area of operations for 38 years, patrolling and fostering relationships within the Indo-Pacific Region.
