YOKOSUKA, Japan – Derek Pursell, 31, originally from Smyrna, Georgia, was pronounced dead at the scene of a traffic accident in Hakone, Japan at approximately 2:30 p.m. (local time) September 12.
Pursell was assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 12 as an Aviation Maintenance Administrationman 1st Class.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the accident.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this most difficult time," said Cmdr. Ethan Haines, commanding officer of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 12. "AZ1 was a beloved shipmate, friend, and fine Navy Sailor - he will be sorely missed by the entire Golden Falcon team."
Pursell enlisted in the Navy on May 10, 2010. He was first assigned to Recruit Training Command at Great Lakes, Ill., followed by the Naval Air Technical Training Center at Meridian, MS. He previously served at Patrol Squadron (VP) 8 in Jacksonville, Fla., and Fleet Readiness Center West Pacific in Iwakuni, Japan, prior to reporting to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 12.
