ESL Sailors Depart Singapore after Giving Back to the Community

By Commander, Submarine Group Seven Public Affairs

SINGAPORE (Dec. 27, 2018) – Sailors assigned to submarine tender USS Emory S. Land (AS 39) departed Singapore this week, capping off an Indo-Pacific deployment marked by bilateral engagements in several countries.

Land Sailors visited Singapore after hosting the Royal Malaysian Navy in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia and Philippine Armed Forces officials in Puerto Princesa, Republic of the Philippines.

While in Singapore, the crew had the opportunity to enjoy the culture and history of Singapore, participate in morale, welfare and recreation activities and participate in community service events. Land Sailors provided more than 20 hours of combined volunteer service to Singaporean organizations such as the Willing Hearts Soup Kitchen and the Salvation Army.

“It has been an honor to give back to the kind, welcoming people of Singapore,” said Capt. Michael Luckett, commanding officer of ESL. “I appreciate having the opportunity to meet new people and build upon our strong relationship with the community.”

Land is one of two Navy submarine tenders that provide maintenance, hotel services and logistical support to submarines and surface ships in the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet areas of operation. The submarines and tenders are maintained as part of the U.S. Navy's forward-deployed submarine force and are readily capable of meeting global operational requirements.
