Captain William Patterson is a native of Massachusetts. He received his commission from the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps program at the College of the Holy Cross in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in physics. He earned a master’s degree in Military Operational Arts and Science from the Air Command and Staff College in Montgomery, Alabama.
A career submarine officer, his sea assignments include Junior Officer on USS Santa Fe (SSN 763), Navigator on USS Topeka (SSN 754) and Executive Officer on USS Florida (SSGN 728). He commanded Submarine Squadron 16 and USS Hawaii (SSN 776).
Captain Patterson’s staff assignments include Threat/Tactics Instructor at the Submarine School in New London, CT; Maritime Action Officer at Headquarters, U.S. Southern Command in Doral, FL; Deputy Operations Officer at Commander, Task Force 69 in Naples, Italy; Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations at Commander, Task Force 74 in Yokosuka, Japan; Executive Assistant to the Director, Undersea Warfare (OPNAV N97) in Arlington, VA and visiting Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations.
Patterson began serving as Chief of Staff, Commander U.S. SEVENTH Fleet in June of 2022.
