By U.S. 7th Fleet Public Affairs

The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS John Finn (DDG 113) conducted a bilateral exercise with allied maritime forces from the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) in the South China Sea, Feb. 15.

During the bilateral exercise, John Finn operated with the Hatakaze-class guided missile destroyer JS Shimakaze (DDG 172), and the Takanami-class destroyer JS Suzunami (DD 114).

"We are honored to sail routinely with our JMSDF allies through these seas,” said Capt. Justin Harts, commander, Task Force (CTF) 71. “This solidifies the bonds between our two nations and demonstrates the interchangeability of our two fleets.”

Throughout the sail, participants enhanced deterrence, interoperability, and demonstrated readiness to respond to any regional contingency. Professional engagement and cooperation with allies and partners is the foundation of regional stability, which fosters peace and prosperity for all nations.CTF 71/Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15, the Navy's largest DESRON and the U.S. 7th Fleet's principal surface force.

U.S. 7th Fleet is the U.S. Navy’s largest forward-deployed numbered fleet and routinely interacts and operates with allies and partners in preserving a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
