MUTSU, Japan (July 26, 2017) — Petty Officer Third Class Higuchi Shoma, Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF), center, pilots USS Pioneer during 2JA 2017 Mine Countermeasures Exercise (2JA-17 MCMEX) as Mineman First Class Zachary Abel, right, observes. 2JA Mine Countermeasures Exercise is an annual bilateral exercise held between the U.S. Navy and JMSDF to strengthen interoperability and increase proficiencies in mine countermeasure operations.
