U.S. 7th Fleet Commander visits USS Ronald Reagan at the start of 2021 deployment

PHILIPPINE SEA (June 2, 2021) Vice Adm. Bill Merz, commander, U.S. 7th Fleet, departs the U.S. Navy’s only forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76). During Merz’s visit he attended meetings with warfare commanders and provided a message to the crew over the ship’s announcement system. Ronald Reagan, the flagship of Carrier Strike Group 5, provides a combat-ready force that protects and defends the United States, as well as the collective maritime interests of its allies and partners in the Indo-Pacific region.

America, lead ship of the America Amphibious Ready Group, along with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, is operating in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations to enhance interoperability with allies and partners and serve as a ready response force to defend peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

Curtis Wilbur is assigned to Commander, Task Force 71/Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15, the Navy’s largest forward DESRON and the U.S. 7th Fleet’s principal surface force.
