USS Michael Murphy Visits Papua New Guinea Ahead of APEC 2018

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (Oct. 6, 2018) Fire Controlman 2nd Class Christian Koch stands watch aboard the Arleigh-Burke class guided-missile destroyer USS Michael Murphy (DDG 112) as it arrives in Papua New Guinea. As the first U.S. Navy ship to visit Port Moresby since USS Comstock (LSD 45) in 2017, Michael Murphy arrives as the nation prepares to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Summit for the first time in Nov. 2018. Michael Murphy is forward-deployed to the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations in support of security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

SOUTH CHINA SEA (Sept. 27, 2018) - The amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1) performs maneuvers as Sailors and Marines, assigned to the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), fire weapons, including Light Armored Vehicles, at a target during a Defense of the Amphibious Task Force (DATF) drill. As part of the DATF, the Wasp Amphibious Ready Group (ARG), 31st MEU team, assumed a security posture, to simulate traveling through potentially dangerous waters. Wasp, flagship of the Wasp ARG, with embarked 31st MEU, is operating in the Indo-Pacific region to enhance interoperability with partners and serve as a ready-response force for any type of contingency.

Smith, who took command in August, met with USS Blue Ridge commanding officer, Capt. Brett E. Crozier, to gain a better understanding of fleet operations and build relationships with senior leadership.

7th Fleet Band Performs American Sound in Yokosuka
