SEA OF JAPAN (June 1, 2017) The guided-missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) sails in formation during a bilateral exercise between USS Carl Vinson and USS Ronald Reagan carrier strike groups and the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). The Ronald Reagan and Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Groups conduct maritime training operations with Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force ships, JS Hyuga (DDH 181) and JS Ashigara (DDG178). JMSDF and U.S. Navy forces routinely train together to improve interoperability and readiness to provide stability and security for the Indo-Asia Pacific region. USS Sterett Sailors Build Relationships in China

Sailors assigned to Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Sterett (DDG 104) practice tying knots together before a seamanship competition with People’s Liberation Army (Navy) (PLAN) sailors during the ship’s scheduled port visit to Zhanjiang, China. Sterett is part of the Sterett-Dewey Surface Action Group and is the third deploying group operating under the command and control construct called 3rd Fleet Forward, June 14, 2017. U.S. 3rd Fleet operating forward offers additional options to the Pacific Fleet commander by leveraging the capabilities of 3rd and 7th Fleets.

VMA-311 Conducts First Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System Live-fire Training in Pacific

An AV-8B Harrier belonging to Marine Attack Squadron 311 taxis after landing aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) while underway in the Pacific Ocean, June 9, 2017. VMA-311 is the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit’s fixed-wing attack asset and is currently attached to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 265 (Reinforced), the 31st MEU’s Aviation Combat Element. During the flight the Harrier’s pilot fired the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS), a laser-guided rocket, for the first time in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region. The 31st MEU partners with the Navy’s Amphibious Squadron 11 to form amphibious component of the Bonhomme Richard Expeditionary Strike Group. The 31st MEU and PHIBRON 11 combine to provide a cohesive blue-green team capable of accomplishing a variety of missions across the Indo-Asia-Pacific.

Marine aviators with VMM-265 (Rein.) and Marine Attack Squadron 311 (VMA-311), which combine to form the Aviation Combat Element of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, refined their nighttime takeoff and landing capabilities during the training.
